3 Unusual Uses for Vaseline

Check out anyone’s medicine cabinet and you’re sure to find a tub of Petroleum Jelly in there somewhere. Petroleum Jelly products like Vaseline have become a household staple, but did you know that they do a lot more than simply hydrate your skin? There are actually loads of different uses for Vaseline, making this one of the most versatile products you can buy for your medicine cabinet. And if you’re worried about Petroleum Jelly dangers, don’t be – it’s non-toxic and non-flammable, not to mention non-irritating and hypoallergenic!

Here are three alternative ways to use Petroleum Jelly at home:

1. Dye your Hair

As anyone who has ever dyed his or her hair at home knows, it’s important to be prepared. There are few things in this world more embarrassing than having to face your friends with a ‘deep mahogany’ or ‘chestnut auburn’ stained forehead! Even the creamy, no-drip formulas don’t have quite what it takes to stay put, meaning our skin often ends up the same colour as our hair.

Petroleum Jelly can help! Before getting to work, apply a layer of Vaseline all round your hairline then, just before hopping in the shower, use a cotton ball to remove it – the dye will slip right off your skin, with no embarrassing stains! There are no Petroleum Jelly dangers to worry about, but do make sure to keep your room well ventilated due to hair dye odours. It’s also important to remember that this tip is one championed by individuals and not the brand itself so you should take other precautions to prevent dying your skin too.

2. Shine your Shoes

One of the most perplexing mysteries of parenthood is how children can be bought new shoes on a Sunday and has them look like they’ve been put through a shredder by the end of school Monday. The kids, of course, insist they’ve done nothing, but the shoes tell a different story. The good news is that there’s no need to buy new shoes, or pay out for expensive shoe polishes.

If the shoes are made from patent leather or synthetic materials (like most school shoes available in the shops), all you need is a clean cloth and a tub of Vaseline. Apply a small amount of Petroleum Jelly to the cloth and then buff away at any scuffs and scratches. While it won’t completely fix the problem, it will bring back the shine and greatly improve the appearance.

3. Protect your Teeth

Have you ever excused yourself to the bathroom after an important meeting and noticed that you’ve been giving your clients big, broad, stained smiles all morning? Tea and coffee are both notoriously bad for staining the teeth, and unless you have access to a toothbrush, there’s not much that can be done about it. Or is there? Once again, Petroleum Jelly could be the answer.

Putting a small amount of Petroleum Jelly on your teeth before a coffee-fuelled meeting could protect your teeth from those nasty brown stains. Petroleum Jelly is completely clear, so no one except you will even know it’s there. It does feel a little strange at first, but you should get used to it before too long. It works simply by making sure there’s nothing the coffee can attach to.

Using Petroleum Jelly Around the Mouth: An Important Note

Some people believe that there are Petroleum Jelly dangers surrounding the toxicity of the product, which could pose a risk if you’re using Vaseline on your teeth, for example, or around your mouth (it makes a great lip exfoliator when mixed with some granulated sugar). Petroleum Jelly is non-toxic, which means that it won’t cause any long-lasting negative effects on the body, even if it is ingested accidentally. It might not taste too great though and could leave you feeling a little dodgy for a while – especially if you ingest a large amount so make sure you use it carefully.
