Traveler Guide to Bangkok

A Budget Traveler’s Guide to Bangkok – How to Extend Your Travel Dollars

Do you have dreams of being able to travel to Bangkok and explore all that this incredible and intriguing destination has to offer, but you’re afraid it’s not within the budget? While there are certain destinations around the world that are known to be expensive to travel to and explore, Bangkok isn’t one of them. In fact, Bangkok can be an ideal place for budget travelers as there are all kinds of ways you can save money without feeling like you are making sacrifices.

Here’s a look at how you can extend your travel dollars in Bangkok.

1. Be Picky About Your Accommodations

When it comes to expenses on your holidays, outside your flight it is the accommodations that tend to eat up the biggest part of the budget. Saving money on accommodations means you can use that money elsewhere. And think about it, how much time do you really plan on spending in your hotel room? The whole purpose of traveling to Bangkok is to explore, which means a large and fancy room probably isn’t necessary.

The good news is that there are plenty of options in terms of budget accommodations, yet they won’t feel like a step-down. Take for example the hotel near Sukhumvit, S33 Compact Sukhumvit Hotel. The hotel is located on Sukhumvit Road, which just so happens to be the main area for business and commercial developments. There are entertainment options, shopping, restaurants, clubs, and more all within reach, yet the hotel itself bills itself as a “stylish budget” option.

2. Dine with the Locals

Another tip is to figure out where the locals are dining, and join them. There will always be restaurants that cater more towards tourists, and while there is nothing wrong with that, they aren’t always the most budget-friendly. The locals will have the inside scoop on the best restaurants in the city, at the most reasonable prices.

One of the more popular places to grab a cheap bite to eat is at the market, such as the Chatuchak street market. You’ll be able to get a fast, authentic, and delicious meal for just a couple of dollars. Chinatown is another great place to explore in the city, and is known for its incredible seafood offerings.

3. Make Use of the Skytrain

If you’re looking for an affordable, reliable, and fast way to get around the city, you can always use the Skytrain (BTS). This train traverses through the inner city, with trains departing every three to six minutes. What you may also be surprised to learn is that taxis are relatively cheap as well. In fact, they are cheaper than Tuk Tuks, which many tourists don’t realize. Keep in mind that traveling by taxi can be slow, especially during rush-hour.

4. A Few Simple Tips

These are just a few of the ways you can enjoy Bangkok on a budget and not feel as though you’re making sacrifices. It’s all about prioritizing your budget and deciding what areas are worth splurging on, and where you can make some cuts.
